About Larimar

Larimar (Blue Pectolite) is a rare form of pectolite, its a beautiful gemstone with an extraordinary blue - green appearance similar to the color of the Caribbean Sea.

Larimar is mined on one unique mountain located at "Los Chupaderos", in the section of "Los Checheses", about 10 kilometers southwest of the city of Barahona, in the south-western region of the Dominican Republic and found nowhere else in the world.

Discovered in 1974 by Norman Rilling, a member of the Peace Corps of the United States, and Miguel Méndez, a Dominican found on the seashore. Larimar has an extraordinary blue appearance similar to the color of the ocean in tropical areas. The name "Larimar" was given by the Dominican who discovered the stone. It is a combination of Larissa (his daughter's name) and Mar, the Spanish word for sea.

Larimar Ring - Heart Shaped Stone

 

Larimar is a result of volcanic activity, which occurred many million years ago on the island of la "La Hispañola". Its crystallization took place when the volcanic lava was cooling off as columns in the tubular "chimneys", in which these pectolites, andesites, basalts and other minerals formed. Larimar is created deep inside volcanic mountains. Excavation is done deep inside this volcanic mountains by native Dominicans with the assistance of simple, primitive tools.

Once the raw material is collected, it is sorted and only those stones that contain Larimar of the appropriate quality to be used in the production of jewels. They are then classified according to size, color, forms and other characteristics. The process continues with the polishing through which the fragments acquire a shine that increases their natural beauty that gets transformed by the creativity of the experienced craftsman into a exquisite piece of Larimar jewelry.

The Larimar Stone is also called the Atlantis Stone, since a wise prophet once claimed that the Dominican Republic was part of the lost continent of Atlantis, an association that has been affirmed by various spiritual and metaphysical authorities.

LarimarDesigns.com is the business that we, the Glanz-Lugo family started. The Glanz-Lugo family consists of my wife Leida, our four small children and myself, Thomas. Ok great, but how were we introduced to Larimar you might ask yourself? OK, here is our story . . .

It all began in the summer of 1998 when I was invited to the Dominican Republic. I was invited by a Dominican friend who lives in that Caribbean Island. I of course accepted the invitation and headed to the Dominican Republic (by the way, during this time I was living in my home country of Puerto Rico). Even though I was visiting the Dominican Republic for the first time, I was not your typical 'tourist' since I was staying at a friends house in the middle of the Island far away from the 'tourists' area. During my week and a half visit I met a lot of nice people and I visited many beautiful places. One night, in the middle of a conversation my friend started to talk about this unique and rare stone (Larimar) only found in the Dominican Republic for which I thought was a very interesting topic. He showed me some of his wife's Larimar Jewelry for which I thought they were magnificent, especially for a person like myself who loves the ocean and who's favorite color is blue. A few days later we visited a mining site for this Larimar Stone (a privilege) and here I could really appreciate this beautiful stone in its most natural way. I was not in the jewelry business so I had never really seen a naturally, nicely colored stone before. I was impressed and simply thought I had experienced something great and new. Well my visit came to an end I went back home. As part of my visit I of course got some take home gifts for the family and can you guess what I got my wife? YES! I of course gave her an all Larimar Necklace with Pendant which she LOVED! (see picture @ left). My wife really loved it and therefore during the next few years she got a few more Larimar Jewelry as part of her Jewelry Collection.

 

Its 2003, we have 3 kids and #4 is coming so we move to the State of Florida U.S.A where I was given the opportunity of a better job. Once in Florida, and baby #4 in its way, we agreed that it would be a privilege if mom (my wife) could stay home to take care of the kids, but we needed to keep her income in order to 'pay rent and survive', so we thought about what she could do, a home business, it had to be something we liked, loved and be something different in order for it to be a success. Guess what was the best and only the best thing we decided to do? Yes, we decided she could start selling this beautiful Larimar Jewelry.

A few years has now passed and we are very happy with the success we have had with Larimar. I myself no longer work full time at my other job and instead help my wife with our Larimar Jewelry Business. We have grown from selling to friends and home parties, to selling at wholesale to many jewelry stores, boutiques and other specialty stores. Since I no longer work full time, I finally got the time needed to go to the next step in our successful business, YES! We are now Online....
